In the Struggle

So if you have not heard much from us, it is because we have been in the thick of the struggle. Ellen has really been feeling terrible. And the medical news is not as encouraging as we would like.

Two weeks ago, Ellen started feeling really bad, with extreme pain. It led eventually to her hospitalization, with a complex list of health problems.

While the pain seems to be a good deal better, she has had swelling of her legs and abdomen, which has caused great discomfort; at times it has kept her from sleeping. She has been unable to eat, but has been gaining weight anyway because of fluid retention. And she has been off and on very weak.

Weak enough that she cannot read. Or watch television. She did listen to all of “To Kill a Mockingbird” on tape.

So in addition to the health effects of the cancer itself, she has pneumonia. And today is the bottom of the trough of her weekly chemotherapy cycle.

So this morning she woke up and to my surprise we went for a walk. And then she said she would like one of those wonderful sandwiches from the Firebrand Delicatessen. Sadly, the Firebrand is closed Sundays. So she had to make do with her husband’s cooking.

She only ate half of it, but that is a start.

We miss you all, and look forward to things changing enough that we can see people in person. You are so important to us.

  1. Luke and Ellen,

Yum! Remember, when you think you’re ready for a dinner, holler! I’m glad you could do a walk. I hope you are starting to feel a bit better. Hard stuff.

And Ellen, thank you for your help with Marina’s number! Now I just call her when I want to reach them!!
